Rooted Hearts Center for Behavioral Addictions
When a Behavior Becomes Hard to Control, Change Is Possible.
Not every addiction involves a substance. Behavioral addictions can become powerful patterns that interfere with relationships, work, school, finances, health, emotional well-being, and everyday life.
At Rooted Hearts Center for Excellence in Behavioral Addictions, we help individuals understand the patterns behind compulsive behaviors and develop healthier, sustainable ways of coping, connecting, and living.
Our approach is compassionate and nonjudgmental. We do not believe you have to be ashamed of a behavior before you deserve help.
We Help With a Range of Behavioral Addictions
Our clinicians provide support for concerns including:
- Gambling — sports betting, casinos, online gambling, and gambling-related financial or relationship problems
- Eating and food-related behaviors — compulsive or emotionally driven eating and difficult patterns around food
- Pornography and compulsive sexual behaviors — when pornography or sexual behaviors feel difficult to control or begin interfering with relationships, work, or daily life
- Video gaming — excessive or compulsive gaming that affects sleep, school, work, relationships, or responsibilities
- Phones and internet — compulsive scrolling, social media, online content, or constant digital engagement
- Sugar and highly rewarding foods — patterns of craving, consuming, and repeatedly returning to foods in ways that feel difficult to control
Understanding What’s Beneath the Behavior
Compulsive behaviors often serve a purpose. They may temporarily relieve stress, loneliness, anxiety, boredom, emotional pain, or overwhelm. Over time, however, the behavior can become a cycle that feels increasingly difficult to interrupt.
Rather than focusing only on stopping the behavior, we help clients understand why the behavior became so powerful in the first place.
Therapy may address:
- Emotional regulation and coping
- Trauma and attachment
- Anxiety, depression, and stress
- Impulse control and habit patterns
- Shame and self-criticism
- Relationships and intimacy
- Boundaries with technology and other triggers
- Identifying triggers and high-risk situations
- Developing healthier sources of reward, connection, and fulfillment
- Rebuilding trust and repairing the consequences of compulsive behavior
You Are More Than Your Behavior
Behavioral addiction can create a painful cycle: urge → behavior → temporary relief → regret or consequences → renewed distress → another urge.
Breaking that cycle requires more than willpower. It requires understanding, skills, support, and a plan that addresses the underlying needs driving the behavior.
Our therapists work collaboratively with each client to create realistic strategies for meaningful change—without shame, punishment, or an all-or-nothing approach.
When It’s Affecting More Than You
Compulsive behaviors rarely affect only the person experiencing them. Partners, spouses, children, family members, and friends may also experience hurt, confusion, mistrust, or frustration.
When appropriate, Rooted Hearts can help address the relational impact of behavioral addictions and support healthier communication, boundaries, accountability, and repair.
A Different Way Forward
You don’t have to wait until a behavior has completely taken over your life to seek help. If you find yourself repeatedly saying “I need to stop,” “I don’t know why I keep doing this,” or “I can’t seem to control it,” therapy may be a place to begin.
You are not your addiction. You are a person who developed a pattern—and patterns can change.
At Rooted Hearts Center for Excellence in Behavioral Addictions, we provide compassionate, evidence-informed care to help you understand the cycle, regain control, strengthen your relationships, and build a life that feels bigger than the behavior.
